NORTH KERALA – SOUTH INDIA’S HIDDEN GEM

We have visited this stunning region of North Kerala for the past five years. Accommodation is in secluded Keralan style bungalows, each discretely set in beautiful, peaceful gardens & all with a view through the palm trees of the deserted white sand beach & the Arabian Sea beyond. The wonderful sunshine, cooling sea breezes, shady palms, & air-conditioned bedrooms create a perfect

North Kerala has yet to be touched by mass tourism & as a result the welcome we receive here is genuine & warm. We always leave knowing that we want to return. We have truly struck gold with our wonderful beachside boutique hotel. It has exactly what we love in a retreat location & despite exhaustive efforts we have yet to stay anywhere in Southern India & Sri Lanka that matches it. We know you will love it here as much as we

THE HOLIDAY

On our 8 day yoga in Kerala retreat we will immerse ourselves in a whole range of relaxing activities, including optional morning & evening yoga in the purpose built shaded yoga shala overlooking the sea. Morning walks along Northern Kerala’s swathes of almost deserted, white sandy beaches.

As a group we like to enjoy a sunset boat trip in a traditional rice boat. Visit a heritage backwater resort to take the opportunity to see the abundant wildlife in Kerala’s northern backwaters. Dine nightly on wonderful freshly prepared Keralan & Southern Indian cuisine & swim in the blood warm waters of the Arabian Sea & the resort’s gorgeous pool.

Festivals take place almost daily at this time of the year in North Kerala & there are many temples, colourful market towns & sleepy villages to explore. Everywhere you go you will be greeted with a warm welcome & a beautiful smile.

Our retreat's gorgeous swimming pool, peaceful beachside grounds & yoga shala.

THE RESORT

Our attractive, French-owned, beachside resort provides beautiful garden bungalows in typical Keralan inspired style, with air-conditioning, stylish yet comfortable furnishings & a restaurant serving locally inspired food. The gardens are beautifully maintained & border a seemingly endless beach.

We practice yoga twice a day in the morning & late afternoon in the shaded yoga shala set among the palm trees overlooking the sea. There is also opportunity for meditation on the tranquil shores of the Arabian Sea as we watch the setting sun.

Along with the scarcity of tourists, another big bonus about this area is the lack of loud ‘boom boom’ bars, dogs on the beaches, who, as anyone who has tried to sit quietly on the beaches of Goa will know can cause quite a disturbance at dusk & during the night.

The perfect setting to cool off, relax in the shade of the palm trees, soak up the sun's rays & practice yoga & meditation overlooking the ocean.

THE YOGA

As with all our yoga holidays, for my yoga retreats in Kerala, I work hard to create a practice that can be adapted to suit all-comers. The yoga classes will comprise the spectrum between slow flow & deeply restorative yoga gently & yin. You can do as much or as little as you please.

The 10 yoga practices arranged throughout the week will be of varying lengths & content. There is never any pressure for guests to take part in every yoga class & non-participating partners are most welcome on the holidays.

I don’t belong to any particular school of yoga & I teach in a spontaneous, non-dogmatic way. Students work at their own pace with a strong emphasis on taking what they need that day from their practice & leaving out what they don’t. In general, the morning yoga sessions on our Kerala yoga retreat, will comprise more flowing yoga practices, with modifications offered to suit the individual levels of students. There will also be pranayama (breathing techniques) & guided meditation & relaxation. The late afternoon/ early evening yoga classes will include a slower asana practice, with some poses held longer for deepening, yin yoga, gentle & restorative sessions, again with pranayama, guided relaxations, yoga nidra & meditations.

THE LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

Guests on our Kerala yoga retreats do as much or as little as they please. For local colour & atmosphere there are local towns to visit not far from our beachside hotel. It is fun making forays by auto-rickshaw into the towns & villages to unearth in the treasure trove of ayurvedic centres, fabrics, spices, jewellery & local delicacies. As tourism has yet to leave its indelible mark here, you still get to experience the real India. The welcome our yoga groups have received in the past five years has been overwhelming. We have have been privileged to be invited to join with the the locals in their festivals, share wonderful meals & sample their favourite coconut tipple, toddy, in the rustic toddy shops.

Other highlights of the Kerala yoga holiday include wandering for miles along the beach watching the local fishermen launch & land their boats, early morning & sunset swims with the dolphins that occasionally pass by. Plus afternoon tea spent lounging under the palms; sampling local delights such as coconut stuffed plantains & delicious sweet fried bananas.

PLAN AN EXTENDED ADVENTURE IN SOUTHERN INDIA

Some of our Kerala yoga retreat guests use their time with us here as a stand-alone holiday in its own right. The hotel can arrange for our guests to be collected from Mangalore Airport. For others the 8 night yoga retreat is part of a more extensive winter trip to this fabulous part of Southern India.

There are a number of local travel companies specialising in Kerala that can help with planning further travel. However we have found that part of the fun is arranging our own additional itinerary. At the time of year we visit, it is not usually necessary to book too far ahead. We are also happy to recommend from our own experiences some fantastic family run home-stays, low key hotels, house boats, fabulous beaches & the cooler upland tea plantations to visit during an extended stay.

We highly recommend the travelling south by train & a visit Fort Kochi (formerly Cochin) where for a number of years the wonderful art Kochi Biennale Art Festival takes place in the historical waterfront warehouses & growing number of contemporary restaurants & galleries. See link for details.

Here in Northern Kerala, India, the deserted backwaters are no less beautiful than the commercialised southern backwaters of Aleppey. There are hundreds of vibrant temples, ancient monuments, a wealth of traditional history & culture. We are welcomed everywhere we go by curious smiling locals, delighted to share with visitors their corner of “God’s Own Country.”

“If you are looking for a boutique, barefoot, relaxing yoga holiday far away from Western tourists yet with everything you need still catered for then this is definitely the place you’ve been looking for.”

TRAVEL TIPS

The e-visa to India has now made visiting India less expensive & is much easier to obtain now that it can be done online.

https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/tvoa.html

The nearest International airport to our resort near the coastal town of Nileshwar, is Mangalore to the north. (Kannur airport is nearer but at time of writing is still offering a full schedule of international or domestic flights)

Mangalore is 2 hours by car or train. You can book a taxi or even quicker, take a train transfer to Nileshwar. Trains travel from central Mangalore several times a day. The management of the hotel is also very happy to help you with any incoming or onward transfer arrangements.

In our opinion the best flight options for guests from the UK to North Kerala are via Mumbai then on to Mangalore or with Emmirates via Doha to Mangalore. Please note there are no direct flights but we have found from experience that the connecting flights on the airlines work very efficiently.
